Rollerskating
Since cool weather has started, I’ve gone rollerskating a couple of times at an indoor rink. I swim during the summer, so I thought I could do an hour of rollerskating no problem. Funny thing, while my heart could handle it, my legs were killing me!
And the next morning I could barely unbend getting out of bed, I was that sore. “You need to skate more than once every two weeks,” stated my husband perfunctorily. True, indeed! I’ve skated three times in the last eleven days and I’m much less sore!
“You need to skate more than once every two weeks,” stated my husband without mercy.
A few weeks ago on this blog I asked the rhetorical question, “Is there a rhythm to this new kind of living that somehow involves rest and renewal?” What other aspects of life do we need to retrain, like my legs needed retraining?
“Come to me, and I will give you rest,” states our Master. Come to me…more than once every 14 days. More than one hour a week at formal worship. Think of me “when you are sitting at home, when you are out walking, at bedtime, and before breakfast!”
The rest settling in your soul might be worth the strained schedule!
One time I purchased a small set of key bible verses in a plastic carrying case about 2” x 3.5”. I would drape it over my steering wheel and choose a verse to say to myself a couple of times on the way to work. Various phrases within the verse would jump out at me and catch my attention. The short time of intense focus really blessed me. Less is sometimes more.
This week, why not simplify something and take time to take in the Master’s messages? You might exercise some spiritual muscles you haven’t used in a while. The rest settling in your soul might be worth the strained schedule! And maybe the schedule will strangely empty out, as your priorities subtly shift. Less is sometimes more.
